Why sleep matters so much

Sleep is often the first thing people give up when life gets busy. Work, family, school and screens all compete for the same hours, and rest tends to lose. But sleep is not wasted time. While you sleep, your body is busy repairing muscles, balancing hormones, storing memories and clearing waste from the brain.

Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Teenagers need even more, and young children need the most of all. Yet about one in three adults in the United States regularly gets less than seven hours. Over time, that missing sleep adds up and affects almost every part of your health.

What happens when you don't get enough

A single short night can leave you tired and irritable. When poor sleep becomes a habit, the effects go much deeper.

  • Heart and blood pressure. During deep sleep, your heart rate and blood pressure naturally drop. Without that nightly break, blood pressure can stay higher, raising the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Weight and blood sugar. Short sleep disrupts the hormones that control hunger and fullness, making you more likely to crave sugary, high-calorie foods. It also makes it harder for the body to manage blood sugar.
  • Immune system. People who sleep poorly tend to get sick more often and recover more slowly, because the body makes fewer of the cells that fight infection.
  • Mood and memory. Lack of sleep makes it harder to focus, remember things and handle stress. Over time, it's linked to a higher risk of anxiety and depression.
  • Safety. Drowsy driving is a real danger. Being awake for 18 hours straight can affect reaction time in a way similar to having alcohol in your system.
"Sleep is not a luxury. It's one of the foundations of good health, just like eating well and staying active."

Simple habits for better sleep

The good news is that small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference. Doctors often call these habits "sleep hygiene."

  • Keep a regular schedule. Go to bed and wake up at about the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps set your body's internal clock.
  • Create a wind-down routine. Spend the last 30 to 60 minutes before bed doing something calm, like reading, stretching or taking a warm shower.
  • Put screens away. The light from phones, tablets and TVs can make it harder to fall asleep. Try to switch them off at least an hour before bed.
  • Make your bedroom sleep-friendly. A cool, dark and quiet room works best. Blackout curtains, a fan or earplugs can help.
  • Watch caffeine and alcohol. Caffeine can stay in your system for six hours or more, so avoid it in the afternoon. Alcohol may make you sleepy at first, but it often leads to lighter, broken sleep later in the night.
  • Get daylight and move during the day. Morning sunlight and regular physical activity both help you feel sleepier at night. Just try not to exercise hard right before bed.

If you can't fall asleep

Almost everyone has a restless night from time to time. If you've been lying awake for about 20 minutes, get up and do something quiet in dim light until you feel sleepy, then go back to bed. Lying in bed worrying about sleep usually makes it harder.

Try not to look at the clock over and over. Counting the minutes tends to increase stress and keep you awake longer. If racing thoughts are the problem, writing them down on a notepad next to your bed can help clear your mind.

When to talk to a doctor

Sometimes poor sleep is a sign of a health problem that needs attention. Talk with a doctor if:

  • You regularly have trouble falling or staying asleep for several weeks.
  • You snore loudly, or someone notices you stop breathing or gasp during sleep. This can be a sign of sleep apnea, a common condition that strains the heart.
  • You feel very tired during the day even after a full night in bed.
  • You have uncomfortable feelings in your legs at night or an urge to move them.

Many sleep problems are very treatable once they're diagnosed. You don't have to just live with being exhausted.

Start with tonight

Better sleep doesn't require a perfect routine. Choose one habit to try tonight, like putting your phone away earlier or going to bed at a set time, and give it a week. Small, steady changes can help you sleep more deeply and wake up feeling more like yourself.
